The Tower of Babel

1. After the flood, Noah and his family began to repopulate the earth. At that time, everyone on the earth spoke the same language.

１ そのころ、人類はみな同じことばを話していました。 Genesis 11:1


2. The people started to scatter, but they mainly lived in the area that is present-day Iraq.

２人口がしだいに増えると、人々は東の方に移って行きました。こうしてバビロンの地に平原を見つけ、大ぜいの人がそこに住みついたのです。Genesis 11:2


3. The people decided to make bricks because stone was scarce in this area. (Archaeologists have found brick ruins in this part of the world.) The people wanted to build a city and a tower that would reach to Heaven. They wanted to “make a name” for themselves and avoid being scattered over the whole earth.

３４やがて大都市を建設しようという話が持ち上がりました。永遠に残る記念碑として、天にも届くような塔の神殿を造り、自分たちの力を見せてやろうというのです。「こうやって一致団結すれば、あちこちに散らされる心配もなくなるというものだ。」そう豪語すると、人々はよく焼いた堅いれんがをうずたかく積み上げ、アスファルトを集めてモルタル代わりにしました。 Genesis 11:3-4


4. There were 2 problems with their plan:

1. Their pride was sin in God’s eyes.

６神様は私たちに、すべての悪い欲望に立ち向かうための強い力を、さらに与えてくださいます。聖書に約束されているように、神様は、謙そんな者には力をお与えになりますが、高慢な者は敵視なさるのです。 James 4:6

プライドが高すぎると身を滅ぼし、なまいきなことばかりしていると失敗します
Proverbs 16:18

2. God wanted the earth to be filled. He had commanded Adam and Noah to fill the earth. (Genesis 1:28 and 9:1)


5. The Lord came down from Heaven to see the city and the tower.

５ 神様は降りて来て、人間どもが造っている町と塔をご覧になりました。
Genesis 11:5


6. The Lord wasn’t happy about the people’s plan. He didn’t want the people to take their destiny in their own hands. God had a plan for them and He wanted to limit their rebellion against Him.

６「いやはや、なんということだ。同じことばを使い、政治的にも一致して事にあたれば、人間はこれだけの事をやすやすとやり遂げてしまう。この分だと、あとでどんな事をしでかすか、わかったものじゃない。何でもやってのけるだう。 Genesis 11:6


7. The Lord decided to confuse the people’s language so they wouldn’t be able to understand each other anymore.

７こうなったら地上へ降りて行って、彼らが違ったことばを話すようにしてしまおう。 そうすれば、互いに何を言っているかわからなくなる。」Genesis 11:7

(“Us” is a reference to the Trinity—one God in 3 persons, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.)


8. So, the Lord scattered the people over all the earth. God’s plan always prevails.

８ こうして、神様は人間を世界の各地に散らしました。 もう都市建設はできません。 Genesis 11:8

２４必ずそうすると、誓いまで立てました。そうすることが神様の目的であり計画だからです。 Isaiah 14:24


9. This place is called “Babel”. “Babel” sounds like the Hebrew word for confused.

９この都の名がバベル〔「混乱」の意〕と呼ばれたのは、このためです。 つまり、神様がたくさんの国語を与えて人間を混乱させ、各地に広く散らしたのが、このバベルの地だったのです。 Genesis 11:9
